Dunedin / Ōtepoti - April, 2024
We pledge our commitment to fostering food resilience in Ōtepoti through collaborative cooperation. Recognising the critical importance of food security for the well-being of our communities, we stand united with other organisations, initiatives, and individuals in our resolve to address the challenges posed by environmental, economic, and social factors.
We pledge to work together to build robust local food systems that are sustainable, equitable, and accessible to all. We acknowledge that the guidance and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi is essential in ensuring all people living in Ōtepoti are included in our efforts. Thus, we recognise the inherent strength in diversity and commit to honouring and amplifying the voices of marginalised groups.
While our opinions regarding solutions may differ, we will share knowledge, resources, and best practices to strengthen our collective capacity to respond to crises and adapt to changing circumstances. Whenever possible, we will prioritise the production and distribution of nutritious, locally sourced foods through partnerships with local growers, producers, and distributors.
Furthermore, we pledge to engage with our communities in meaningful dialogue, listening to their needs and aspirations, while co-creating solutions that promote food sovereignty and self-reliance. We will work with local and regional governments to ensure community-led initiatives are included in any council decisions about the future of our local food systems.
In signing this pledge, we affirm our dedication to building resilient communities in Ōtepoti that thrive in the face of adversity. Together, we will cultivate a future where no one in our city goes hungry, and all have access to locally produced, sustainable, nourishing, and culturally appropriate foods.
Signed,
